Curiosità
È un disco dal sound meno duro rispetto ai precedenti Iron Maiden (1980) e Killers (1981), ma che mette a nudo tutta la creatività di Steve Harris e di tutta la band. Melodie e assoli di chitarra sono di primissimo ordine, la coordinazione tra i membri durante le esecuzioni è ottima e evidenzia subito una grande intesa col nuovo cantante Bruce Dickinson, che mostra in tutte le canzoni la pienezza e la costanza della sua voce invidiabile per qualsiasi cantante rock.
L'iniziale Invaders, è una canzone di notevole impatto, un brano corto e veloce che rievoca la cruenta invasione vichinga in Inghilterra.
La successiva Children Of The Damned è invece un brano più articolato, dove i ritmi e il cantato evocano un certo senso di angoscia, funzionale al tema della canzone: essa parla di sei bambini, dotati di particolari poteri psichici, che sono costretti a lottare per la loro sopravvivenza contro la razza umana. Il brano si ispira al film omonimo del 1963 (In Italia Il villaggio dei dannati) di Wolf Rilla, a sua volta basato sul libro The Midwich Cuckoos di John Wyndham.
The Prisoner è ispirata all'omonima serie TV inglese: viene infatti introdotta da un dialogo il cui contenuto è estratto dal telefilm stesso. Da notare, in questa canzone, la serie di assoli nella parte centrale, eseguiti sopra un tappeto ritmico assolutamente trascinante.
22 Acacia Avenue è la continuazione della saga di Charlotte the Harlot, iniziata con l'omonimo brano presente in Iron Maiden. Il titolo corrisponde all'indirizzo in cui la prostituta Charlotte, protagonista della saga, si incontrava con i suoi clienti.
La title track The Number of the Beast, è la trasposizione in musica di un sogno fatto da Steve Harris, in cui lui si trovava ad assistere ad una messa nera. Il titolo della canzone si riferisce chiaramente al numero 666, menzionato nel Libro della Rivelazione della Bibbia: un piccolo estratto del testo sacro (Apocalisse 12:12; 13:18), recitato da Vincent Price, viene infatti utilizzato come introduzione alla canzone.
Run to the Hills, è una canzone che esalta con il suo incedere sostenuto, venendo magistralmente interpretata soprattutto nelle linee vocali, atte a riflettere lo spirito "assassino" delle battaglie fra inglesi e nativi d'America ai tempi della colonizzazione degli Stati Uniti.
Altro brano storico è Hallowed be thy Name ("Sia santificato il Tuo nome", con riferimento ad un passaggio della preghiera cristiana Padre Nostro), che parla delle ultime ore di un condannato a morte: canzone di grande spessore tecnico e compositivo, le sue linee vocali e melodiche sono talmente geniali da essere in grado di trasportare l'ascoltatore in un'atmosfera tesa e carica di pathos.
